Homework for Monday, July 23

You must bring a story or a poem from your creative writing class. We will be using InDesign to manipulate the text over a photo you choose for a background. This will be our final project, due at the end of class on the 25th. It might be helpful to find a photograph or two that relate somehow to the visual imagery you imagine in your story.

Animated GIF's: The Next Project

This is a very simple example of an animated GIF file (click on the image to view it). Your assignment will be to make two types of animations. One will require you to use simple symbols such as those used in this example (though yours will be more involved). The other animation will require you to use pictures and other imagery which you will also animate frame by frame. I will explain the process in class on the 11th.

Digital Artists

One good way to make interesting art is to check out what other artists are doing. You might be surprised about some really good ideas you can borrow and make your own that you might not have thought about before.

Cory Arcangel uses pop music and Nintendo games to create digital art.

This is one of Cory's pieces based on Super Mario Bros. This one is based on a car racing game.

Other digital artist Like Marisa Olson and Abe Linkoln did a project together called Abe and MO Sing the Blogs.

Joel Swanson developed a story called Fat Simon. (You will probably have to allow pop-up windows for this to work. If you don't get a prompt asking you to allow pop-ups, click on the name of your browser (Firefox) then Preferences, then under the Content tab uncheck "block pop-up windows").

Take some time and explore the site Techne Studio. You also need to explore the Whitney Artport site. Your homework for Wednesday July 11 is to look at the art on these sites and post a blog entry describing why you like or dislike the digital art you see and create a link to something specific you responded to.

Homework for July 9 class

1. Finish your Photoshop self-portrait! This includes posting it to your blog (and making certain that you have sent me the link to your blog - There are 7 of you who have not done this).

2. Go to photobucket and get an account if you don't already have one. You will need this account in order to post the next project we make in class.

These two things are to be completed before we meet again on Monday the 9th. If you have seen this posting, get the word out to everyone in your class so no one is left behind.

First Assignment

Project 1: Self-Portrait Collage

Read THIS for Wednesday before you begin.

For this project you will first make self-portraits in class using Photo Booth (do not use Photo Booth effects). You will use Photoshop to edit these images and change them in a creative way.

You will also need to select several objects that are Metaphors for your personality. Using images of these objects along with photographs of friends and family, combine them together using Photoshop to create a digital collage that represents the things that are most important to you. Keep certain aspects in mind when choosing your objects and pictures: color, texture, shape, and other Elements of Design that you read about.

You should bring pictures to class with you that are metaphors for your personality. If you find an image online that you want to use, post it to your blog so it is easy to access. You will not need more than 5 items.

We may be able to scan these in during class, but it is best if we only have to upload images found online.

The minimum manipulation requirements are:
Adjust the color of at least one of your images
Use at least 3 different filters
Use at least one layer style
You must have a background with objects just in front of it
You must have objects in the middle ground that overlap the background
You must have objects in the foreground that overlap everything behind them

Getting Started

For our first class I would like you to create an e-mail account for yourself if you do not already have one. To set up an account, go here or here.

Once your account is set up, send me an e-mail using this account with your name, age, and how often you use the computer.

Next, I need you to set up a blog for yourself through Blogger. This is where you will post all of your work for class. Once you have set up this account, send me another e-mail with the URL of your blog page so I can link it to the Upward Bound Digital Art blog.

Your blog page should also be used for things like journaling about your summer, posting pictures and links to your favorite websites, and other interesting things you think others in the class would benefit from learning about.
